Taxi journeys – key points to remember

  • The taxi company sets its own prices.

  • The price information displayed on the outside of the vehicle shows the company’s price level.

  • Make a complaint in writing to the taxi company if you believe you have paid too much.

Taxi fares

  • All taxis must display price information both outside and inside the vehicle. It is important to check the price level before getting into the taxi. You can do this by looking at the comparison price displayed on the outside of the vehicle. Inside the taxi, you must be able to see how the cost of your journey is calculated.

In Sweden, taxi companies are free to set their own prices. There is no regulation that sets a maximum fare for taxi journeys.

    The tariff determines the price

The price of your journey is determined by the taxi company’s tariff. The tariff is the cost of the journey based on travel time and distance. The price is divided into different categories depending on the day and time.

The fare consists of several parts:

    • Start fee: A fixed charge when the journey begins.
    • Price per kilometre: A charge per kilometre travelled.
    • Time charge: A charge per hour.

Comparison price displayed on the vehicle

The outside of the vehicle must display a comparison price. This shows the company’s price level and allows you to compare prices between taxi companies.

The comparison price is based on a journey of 10 kilometres that takes 15 minutes.

There may be several comparison prices displayed on a vehicle. This is because taxi companies can have different prices depending on the day and time of travel and must display all applicable comparison prices.

According to the Swedish Transport Agency (2025), the comparison price is usually between SEK 351 and SEK 500.

    Price information inside the vehicle

Inside the vehicle, you must be able to see the applicable charges for each tariff. You should also be able to see the comparison price for each tariff. The information must be clearly visible from all seats. If the taxi company charges extra fees, for example for larger luggage or a child seat, this must also be clearly stated.

To estimate the cost of your journey, you need to find out:

    • how far you are going
    • how long the journey is expected to take
    • whether a start fee applies.

Check which tariff applies and calculate the price accordingly.

    Comparison price above SEK 700

If the comparison price is higher than SEK 700, the driver must provide a price in advance when you book the journey.

The quoted price is binding and must state the maximum amount the journey can cost. You have the right to receive the price in a form that you can keep as proof.

If the taxi company offers a fixed price

Some taxi companies offer fixed prices. If a company only applies fixed prices, it must provide a price list showing the cost of different journeys.

If you are given a fixed price by the driver, you should not have to pay more than that amount.

You can find more information about price information for taxi journeys on the Swedish Transport Agency’s website.

If you experience problems

  • Since pricing is not regulated in Sweden, taxi companies can set their own prices. However, they cannot require you to pay more than the price stated on the outside and inside of the vehicle.

If a taxi company requires you to pay more than the stated price or a fixed price you agreed on, you can dispute the charge.

    Make a complaint in writing

If the driver insists that you pay the full amount immediately, you may need to do so. Inform the driver that you are not satisfied with the price. Keep the receipt and take a photo of the price information displayed on the taxi. Contact the taxi company in writing, for example by email, to make a complaint.

In your complaint you should explain why you are not satisfied. State that you want a refund of the amount that exceeds the stated price. Attach evidence supporting your claim. Keep a copy of your complaint.

If you paid by card or invoice

If you paid by card, you may be able to request a refund through your bank. This is known as chargeback.

Getting your money back if you paid by card

If you are paying by invoice, you can dispute the part of the invoice you believe is incorrect. Pay the amount you consider correct based on the company’s pricing and dispute the rest in writing.

An alternative is to pay under protest. This means you pay the full amount but inform the company in writing that you do not agree with the charge. It can be a good option if you are unsure about disputing the claim.

How to dispute an incorrect invoice

  • You can file a complaint with the National Board for Consumer Disputes.

The authority will assess your case and recommend how the dispute should be resolved. Most companies follow its recommendations.

    Cost of filing a complaint

It costs SEK 150 to file a complaint. You can request that the company reimburses this fee if your claim is upheld.

Requirements for your case to be considered:

    • The taxi company has rejected your claim or not responded within a reasonable time.
    • The disputed amount exceeds the Board’s minimum threshold (the fee is not included).
    • You submit your complaint within one year from when you first contacted the company.

Submit a complaint on ARN’s website
